Crystal Pier helped transform one of San Diego’s oldest communities
History: Established in 1887, Pacific Beach is one of San Diego’s oldest suburbs. Its centerpiece was supposed to be the 23-acre College of Letters, which opened in 1888 on the Garnet Avenue land where the Pacific Plaza shopping center now stands. The college soon closed due to lack of students. With the exception of farming (lemons were the prime crop), the community remained sleepy until construction of the Crystal Pier in the late 1920s, with a ballroom and amusement center — soon shut down due to construction flaws. When it reopened in 1936, the pier was longer, and the ballroom was replaced by cottages. World War II and San Diego’s military presence boosted P.B.’s profile and population. Visitors still flock to Crystal Pier, and partygoers converge on Garnet Avenue bars.
Did you know? The late Larry Gordon and his surfing buddy Floyd Smith launched the famed Gordon & Smith Surfboards out of a Pacific Beach garage. Surfer and “Endless Summer” co-star Mike Hynson learned to surf in P.B., and the late Frank Zappa was a student at Mission Bay High School.
Try this: Neighbors on the Nextdoor social network suggest Fig Tree Eatery, Sushi Ota and Leilani’s Cafe.
Things to do: Spend the night in a Crystal Pier cottage. Have a sunset picnic with a killer view at Sessions Park. Paddleboard on Mission Bay. Watch the action at Tourmaline Surfing Park. And keep an eye out for the green flash. It could happen to you.
